Microsoft has taken another significant step toward its ambitious carbon-negative goal by purchasing 60,000 soil carbon credits from Indigo Ag, a leader in sustainable agriculture solutions. This marks the second collaboration between the two companies, following an earlier purchase of 40,000 credits last year.
Indigo Ag’s carbon program supports U.S. farmers in adopting regenerative agriculture practices, such as cover cropping, diversified crop rotation, reduced tillage, and improved nitrogen timing. These techniques not only enrich soil health but also sequester carbon dioxide, contributing to long-term climate solutions.
The latest transaction is sourced from Indigo’s fourth carbon crop, which consists of over half a million independently verified carbon credits issued through the Climate Action Reserve. Microsoft’s investment reinforces the credibility and scalability of soil-based carbon removal as a viable climate action strategy.
Indigo Ag ensures that 75% of carbon credit sales go directly to farmers, accelerating their transition to sustainable practices. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also strengthens rural economies by providing financial incentives for climate-friendly farming.
Microsoft remains the largest corporate buyer of carbon removal credits globally, having contracted nearly 22 million tons of carbon removal last year alone. The company continues to diversify its portfolio, investing in biochar, forest management, bio-energy carbon capture and storage (BECCS), and reforestation.
This partnership between Microsoft and Indigo Ag highlights the growing importance of nature-based solutions in tackling climate change. As companies worldwide seek high-integrity carbon removal strategies, soil carbon credits are emerging as a trusted and scalable option for long-term sustainability.
