Gold Standard has introduced the Engineered Removals Activity Requirements - a certification framework for technology-based CO₂ removal methods such as Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).

Key requirements include:

  • Mitigating reversal risks by mandating buffer contributions to ensure long-term permanence.
  • Enforcing environmental and social safeguards, and requiring contributions to at least three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Alignment with global frameworks such as the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework, ICAO CORSIA, and Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement.

With over two decades of experience in certifying nature-based carbon removal, Gold Standard is now expanding into engineered solutions, backed by a “Just and Sustainable Transitions Framework” to ensure benefits for host communities.

Two updated carbon removal methodologies in 2025 include:

  • Carbon mineralisation via reactive mineral waste with improved baselines.
  • Biomass fermentation with carbon capture and storage, applicable for BECCS and industrial sources.

Through rigorous certification, updated methodologies, and community-focused principles, Gold Standard is setting a new benchmark for the carbon market - reinforcing that engineered carbon removal must go hand in hand with rapid emissions reductions to keep the 1.5°C target within reach.
